Transmission Control Protol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suite was created by the Department of Defense (DoD) to ensure and preserve data integrity. If designed and implemented correctly a TCP/IP network can be a truly dependable and resilent one.
TCP/IP Model v/s OSI Model
TCP/IP (DoD) Model | OSI Model |
Process/Application | Application Layer Presentation Layer Session Layer |
Host-to-Host | Transport Layer |
Internet | Network Layer |
Network Access | Data Link Layer Physical Layer |
TCP/IP or DoD Model has four layers, viz. Process/Application Layer, Host-to-host, Internet and Network Access Layer.
Process/Application Layer of DoD is same as Layer 5, 6 and 7 of OSI Model, which deals with the application to be used for data transfer, also data services like encryption and decryption and also controls user-interface specifications.
Host-to-Host is same as Layer 4 of OSI Model, which deals with the type of communication to be used like a reliable or unreliable, also provides error-free data delivery, handles packet sequencing and maintains data integrity.
Internet is same as Layer 3 of OSI Model, which deals with logical transmission of data packets over the entire network, handles the routing of packets among multiple network.
Network Access Layer is same as Layer 2 and Layer 1 of OSI Model, deals with the error notification and hardware addressing and defines protocols for the physical transmission of Data.
