Linux Shell Commands - Part 5

In this post I am going to discuss some more useful commands



1. 'which' --> reveals where in the search path a program is located

    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5# which python
    /usr/bin/python
    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5#
    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5# which msfconsole
    /usr/local/bin/msfconsole
    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5#

2. 'locate' --> reveals where a directory or file is located

    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5# locate msfconsole
    /opt/framework3/app/msfconsole
    [some outputs ommited]
    /usr/share/applications/backtrack-framework3-msfconsole.desktop
    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5#

3. 'whereis' --> reveals all the path to a program

    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5# whereis python3
    python3: /usr/bin/python3.1 /usr/bin/python3 /etc/python3.1 /usr/lib/python3.1 /usr/lib64/python3.1 /usr/local/lib/python3.1 /usr/include/python3.1 /usr/share/python3 /usr/share/man/man1/python3.1.gz
    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5#

4. 'find' --> reveals all the files, directories and subdirectories in the given path which accepts wildcard characters

    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5# find /root/JavaProgs/
    /root/JavaProgs/
    /root/JavaProgs/testDir2
    /root/JavaProgs/dirtraverse.java
    /root/JavaProgs/dirtraverse.java~
    /root/JavaProgs/Hello.class
    /root/JavaProgs/hello.java
    /root/JavaProgs/testDir1
    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5#
    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5# find /root/JavaProgs/ -name *.java
    /root/JavaProgs/dirtraverse.java
    /root/JavaProgs/hello.java
    /root/JavaProgs/print.java
    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5#


5. 'history' --> reveals all the commands typed in the shell

    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5#

     1215  locate perl
     1216  locate msfconsole
     1217  whereis python
     1218  whereis python2.7
     1219  whereis python3
     1220  find /root/JavaProgs/
     1221  history
    root@bt:~/Desktop/Ckorner/post5#
